Why We Love: Standing Foldover with Turnout

Long lines at the ballet barre are a staple of barre fitness. And this exercise is a BarreAmped® favorite for so many reasons. Here are just a few reasons why we love Standing Foldover with Turnout:

1/ It’s easier to hit Glute Med in this position without pulling in the hip flexors.

Lifting the leg laterally (to the side) can access the glue muscles that wrap around to the side of the hip. But sometimes when we try to access Glute Medius, the hip flexors can actually try to take over. Standing Foldover with Turnout is a great barre exercise that helps us keep the work focused in the sweet spot of Glute Med.

2/ It approaches seat work from a different angle than most traditional barre glute exercises.

Because the glutes tend to do a lot of hip extension, we can tend to focus on that type of movement. But glutes do abduction as well, so Standing Foldover with Turnout gives us the chance to do just that.

3/ It’s one of those positions that leaves you feeling long, strong, and graceful.

Exercise is supposed to be difficult, yes, but it should also be nourishing. So including movement that just “feels good” in the body is always welcome!
